Cabin and Two Person Tents: A Brief History

Camping is a great pastime that people have been enjoying for decades.  Whether you want to get away from the busy city or just explore the trees in your backyard, camping is guaranteed family fun in the great outdoors.  The most important item to have when camping is, of course, a tent.  But when did people begin using tents, and why?

Tents have been used as far back as the l800s.  Originally, they were used mostly by the army and people traveling westward across America.  One of the first tents to have a patent on the design was the Sibley tent, which had a cone-shaped design similar to that of a teepee.  Since then, tents have come a long way in design and function.

Today, tents fall into several categories.  There are party tents, pop up tents, pickup tents, and family or cabin camping tents.  These different types of tents are no longer limited in use to military or travelers.  In fact, the different categories of tents mean that just about anyone can find the right tent for their specific needs, even if they never leave their own backyard.

Party tents are open-sided tents that provide shade and are often used in backyards during summer parties  They often just require a few poles to hold up the sides of the tent and some pegs to anchor the tent.  Some of these tents have no sides at all, while others have netting for sides and a zip opening in the front.

Pop up tents are your typical, easy to assemble tents used at a traditional campsite.  They can range in size, sleeping from one to several people.  These tents are ideal for young or novice campers, as they are very easy to set up.  Just pop a few rods together and insert where necessary.

A camping tent is a lightweight, very compact, heavy duty tent used by serious campers.  They are great for hikers, as their light weight makes them a breeze to carry in your backpack, or to take with you rechargeable LED flashlights.  These types of tents are made of rip stop nylon, which is both breathable and durable.  Such tents often come with a rain cover, which allows air to flow into the tent and keeps the rain from coming through the roof.

Family or cabin camping tents, that can accomodate pocket buck knives are quite different from these traditional camping tents.  They are much larger than a traditional tent, and sleep four to five people.  They can be up to twenty feet wide, and some types even allow adults to stand fully upright inside the tent, a feature that pop-up and traditional camping tents don’t often have.  These tents are often divided into two or three rooms, allowing for some privacy within the tents.  Clearly, no matter what your level of camping skill is or what kind of terrain you’ll be trekking through, there is a type and size of tent that will meet your needs.
