Camping Gear for the Rugged Outdoorsman: What things do you need?

For the avid outdoorsman, there are many things necessary to have in order to be prepared for any event that could occur.  Unlike the Survivor TV series, we aren’t betting that you are going to be hiking without the proper equipment. We will assume you will be camping with the necessary gear. Depending on where you are hiking, there are the basics.

You will want to make sure that you have good boots/clothes.  Boots are the most essential part to the outdoorsman.  Whether hunting, hiking, climbing, or working, the boot makes the task seem far more enjoyable.  The proper clothes will keep you protected and dry.

A good boot will eliminate the risk of blistering, it will be water proof, and it will allow for proper ventilation and circulation.  It also will be durable and well constructed.  Prices for good boots vary but you’ll pay a higher price tag than lower quality, but it is worth it when you are carrying your gear through various environments.

The rugged outdoors man will have a truck tent that can withstand the elements of these environments.  Be sure to look for tents that have a well insulated floor, zippered windows, and a “storm shield”.  A storm shield is like a roof that hooks onto the test that can keep out rain and block wind, snow, etc.  Make sure that the floor tent is light and easy to pack and unpack.  There is nothing worse then trekking with an extremely heavy tent and then spending an hour setting it up.  Plus, you’ll be hauling other tools with you besides the tent, so weight is a very important factor.

You’ll need tools for food.  Make sure you have white gas with you for getting fires started (mainly if you carry a mini burner with you that would require it.  These are amazing little tools and so convenient!).  Never forget to have a knife on you.  You will need to have a knife for cutting and slicing.  If you have to cut up a tree branch to help build your fire, cut up food, or fix miscellaneous things as you hike, a knife is a necessity.  Many outdoorsmen will carry a multipurpose tool with them for this reason.  How are you going to carry all of these things?

An outdoor backpack is needed.  Be sure to get one with strong back support bars.  Also be sure to check for chest and waist straps.  This will help with stability.  The amount of gear the back can hold is highly important.  Make sure you will be able to carry your tent, your extra clothes, food, lighter, gas, etc.

There you have it; Camping gear for the rugged outdoorsmen.  This gear isn’t for your back yard camp outs with the family.  This gear is for the rugged climber looking to venture out past the borders of rural towns into vacant uninhabited areas.  Without the above items, you’ll be in for a rude awakening.
