Also take a small first aid kit. A small whistle is also recommended in case of emergency. A small knife shoould also come handy. Also you should take a lunch pack. Food For Thought When Camping

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Planning what you eat while camping is critical—being outdoors makes everybody hungry.  Your options depend on the type of camping.  For example, if you are backpacking, you have to choose food items that are light in weight.  Still, before you buy a ten-day supply of freeze-dried spaghetti, check to see if the backpacking foods you are considering are going to be something you will want to eat after seventeen miles on the trail.  It’s worth trying them at home to make sure they taste good to you.  You also have to consider how you plan on preparing your food—using a small stove, building a fire (where allowed), or only eating ready-to-eat meals.

If you are “car camping,” where you have your vehicle nearby, you have more choices.  You can carry along a cooler not just for drinks but also for perishable foods that are to be eaten within about twenty-four hours.  You can also use your car to restock your supply, if necessary.  And, you have more choices about how you plan to cook—you can use a propane stove or bring along charcoal and a grill.

Hiking Boots and How to Fit Them

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

When going out hiking, wearing the appropriate footwear is important.  At first glance, something simple and comfortable like tennis shoes might seem perfectly acceptable, but in reality when you plan to be hiking on uneven surfaces or rough terrain for a long period of time, you need something more specialized.

Unlike tennis shoes, hiking boots provide good ankle support, extra cushioning for the feet, and protection from rocks and water.  The soles are also much thicker and have tread designed to help a hiker keep a good purchase even on slippery surfaces.  There are also boots with more functions that have other additional features, for example mountaineering boots with crampons.

It is important to find boots that fit.  They should be snug on the foot, over a good pair of hiking socks, without causing the toes to cramp, and the laces should be able to tie securely.  It is also important to break them in before wearing them.  Buying a fresh new pair of boots Monday and going on a four-hour hike Tuesday is virtually guaranteed to cause blisters.  Getting a new pair of well-fitting boots a few weeks in advance and then wearing them around town to help fit them to your feet is the best way to ensure a comfortable hiking experience.

Rain Coverage: Tarp Or Rain Fly?

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Many people every year pull of successful and dry camping trips using just the rain fly that was provided with the tent they use. The extremely lucky few campers may even go an entire season or several seasons without seeing any rain at all. But for most of us, this isn’t the case. Some tend to camp in areas that are more prone to rain, while some just have bad luck and seem to get rained upon every trip. For these campers, staying dry can be the difference between a fun, relaxing weekend and a horrible one.

For years people have debated whether or not to use a rain fly for protection or a tarp. But for any serious camper the answer is obvious – tarp. Sure it might add a little bit of weight and take a little bit more space in your bag, but the protection is unrivaled by a normal rain fly, even one that has been waterproofed with a spray or other material. Tarps come in all shapes, sizes and materials too, so finding the perfect one for your tent will be a breeze!
