Thoughts about camping

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Friendly squirrels eating out of your hand, green grass, trees and birds, sleeping under a lovely sheet of midnight stars, feel at one with nature. Some people declare that this is camping. On the other hand, there are other people that say camping and think sleeping on mud, evil squirrels biting you, birds flying and eating your food, sleeping with large germs and cursing out nature and camping.

Actually we are not going to learn the real answer which is probably lies between the two. Of course, camping is great and funny, but you also can’t forget that along with the nature and outside activities comes unpredictability. Therefore, if you don’t plan your trip properly, then you might end up with rain, evil squirrels, or those huge bugs out of the blue. Start a fire with some home made stuff

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

The real joy of a camping outing is in sitting under the open sky with a cracking fire at your feet to keep you warm. However, this is also the part that most people find difficult since it is not easy to start a fire in the wild, though my Australian friends would differ on that! Preparing cotton balls which are soaked in petroleum jelly is a great option as this keeps the fire burning for a few minutes.

Coating a stiff cardboard with wax from a candle or any other source is a pretty useful tool to start a fire. An alternate option to the petroleum jelly balls is to extend the same concept to wax. Soaking a cotton ball in molten wax, allows its absorb the wax and expand. Store these in a plastic bag and when you need to use them, you can just pull a few strands of the cotton to light the fire.

Best Water Filters are Ceramic

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

From my 10 years experience as a Boy Scout, I have had plenty of experience with various water filtration systems. The best tasting water I have ever had came from a water filter that used a ceramic filter. These offer superior protection as no living organism can pass through its tiny pores. However, other filters  will get the job done. The ceramic ones can be a bit pricey.

However, don’t let price become too big of an issue. I always use a water filter for taste and safety. Chemical treatments just don’t taste right. They are just as effective, but make your water taste like it came from a swimming pool. I have also had some stomach aches after drinking water treated in this way. For your outdoor adventure, I recommend a reasonably priced pump filtration system whether it uses ceramic or other filters.
