A Word of Advice for Campers

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

The last time I went camping I decided to go solo and forget about bringing a tent since I really don’t like setting them up. I planned on bringing a BBQ, my guitar, and my mountain bike. I figured it would be a really nice and simple trip since I wouldn’t have to hassle with setting up and tearing down.

It turns out that while this was nice in theory, the reality had one major flaw: the bed of my truck is cold, ridged metal, and all I brought was a thin sleeping bag and a pillow. It was so uncomfortable that I ended up sleeping in the cab with the window open so my feet could stick out. Let’s just say that it didn’t turn out to be the relaxing vacation I had hoped for, but I know I’ll never take my truck without a mattress or pad of some kind.

Choosing the right Tent

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Tents are mostly about size. My wife and I have tried all different sizes of tents. Tents advertise a number of people that you can sleep in there but let’s face it, it’s like trying to fit the advertised number of people in a car. Sure it’s possible, but unless your destination is 15 minutes away it’s just not plausible.

Another thing to consider is your gear. Are you going to leave your gear outiside or inside? Unless it’s food, most people like to keep their gear inside so it stays dry. That takes up the place where a person would be. A good rule of thumb is about half the number of people can comfortably sleep in a tent than what is advertised. The only time this isn’t true is if you’re hiking, then you have to worry about size and weight, but then you probably already know what to buy.

Keep your family happy with a Family & Cabin Tent

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Camping can be an exhilarating and educational experience for the whole family, but picking the right tent can make or break your outing. As beautiful as nature is you and your family must also be protected from the elements. A Family Cabin Tent is an excellent way to enjoy the wonder of nature while keeping everyone safe and comfortable.

Cabin tents often come with privacy features such as partitions that will allow you to separate a single tent into multiple rooms.  Privacy is an easy way to allow you and your children to “rough it” while maintaining a sense of space and normalcy which is very important for the teenagers in your family. Choosing a good quality Cabin Tent can mean the difference between a pleasant camping vacation with your family and a camping nightmare that could turn your family off to camping forever. For safety comfort and privacy on your next trip choose a Family and Cabin Tent.

Good Sleeping Bags – Worth their Weight in Gold

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

One of the most common issues novice campers have is figuring out what sleeping bag will be most appropriate for their needs.  It’s very easy to get one that’s either far too warm for a summertime trip or far too cold for a fall, winter, or spring expedition.  And either way will make for a miserable night and possibly ruin your entire trip.

The best thing to do before purchasing is to research your destination.  Find out what the seasonal average overnight temperatures are and write them down.  Bring that information to your local camping goods store as you’ll find that a good sales assistant will have a wealth of information about which sleeping bags are most appropriate for those conditions.

And don’t forget to tell them about how you sleep.  If you absolutely cannot sleep any other way than spread out on your stomach, a tight fitting mummy bag probably isn’t for you.  If you like extra blankets at night, you may require a warmer sleeping bag than other folks you’re travelling with.  And if you’re going summertime camping, you may want to find one that is either very lightweight or has a built in mosquito net.   Purchase with care, and the right equipment will help make your trip great.
