Tools for a campfire

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

I learned at an early age that building a campfire is easy when you have the right tools and know-how. There are a few basic steps that you must do in order to prep the site for the fire. Bring along a small broom and a miniature shovel to clear any leaves, rocks or other debris. Take a sturdy bag, a mesh one works well, for collecting rocks, branches and twigs. Don’t forget a bucket and fire extinguisher, safety first!

There are several different ways to start a fire but we have a bunch of boy scouts in our family and they prefer the old fashioned friction and leaves method. Regardless of how you get a flame going, construct your fire so that it best suites your intention whether it’s cooking, warmth or storytelling there’s a specific way to build it.  Consult a scouting book or website for instructions on how to build different types of campfires. Remember to always douse the campfire and scatter the ashes. Never build a fire near a tent and never leave it unattended. Following those rules will give you the best campfire experience possible!

Camping at The Applewhite Campgrounds in Lytle Creek, CA

Monday, July 27th, 2009

The Applewhite Campgrounds are an ideal place for testing out your camping gear. You simply pay the fee required to camp there and go to your desired lot. There is a bench that you may eat at, plenty of camping space to accommodate you and your family or friends, a space to park your vehicle and a fire pit to cook your meals if you don’t have a camping cooker.

There is also a creek near by which also requires a fee. After that is paid however, you have access to the creek, which you may fish, swim and canoe in. Canoe rentals are also near the campsite. If you’re feeling adventurous there is a hiking trail not too far from the campgrounds that leads to Bonita Falls. Bonita Falls is a beautiful waterfall and is definitely worth the hike. The hike isn’t very long either; it takes about 45-50 minutes for an inexperienced hiker to reach the waterfall.

Portable camping cookers to the rescue!

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Starting and maintaining a fire in a pit either dug by you or provided by the campgrounds can be very dangerous especially if there are kids running around. Fire is unpredictable and can change from safe to dangerous in a matter of seconds. You don’t want something with that propensity around your family or friends.

This hazard can be prevented with the purchase of a portable camping cooker. The fire is controlled only staying at the temperature/size that you set it to. It can easily be set on a bench and supervised by one adult. The cooking will be much more efficient than a wild fire created by burning wood as well. Make sure your family isn’t at risk of a wild fire unexpectedly spreading and buy a portable camping cooker.

Protecting yourself by using the proper camping gear

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

No matter what stories your grandfather told you about how he courageously camped out in the wilderness with nothing but the clothes on his back and a can of beans, you should always make sure you have the necessary supplies to camp safely. A tint is always a necessity when camping no matter what your friends and family has convinced you. You should have sleeping bags inside the tint to keep you warm as well as food and a gas powered grill or safely prepared fire pit to cook it on.     There once was a foolish man who thought he could do the be courageous like the grandfather. He decided to camp with only food and a sleeping bag. “I’m a real man, I don’t need a tent!” the man proclaimed to his wife and friends. His wife tried to convince him it would be much too cold to do such a thing, but the man’s pride and ego had clouded his brain and the wife realized his mind was made up. So she allowed him to continue his irrational decision. It had grown late into the night and everyone was asleep, the wife and friends in their warm tints and the man near the fire in his sleeping bag.

Suddenly, an intense piercing in the man’s left shoulder awakened him. He immediately swiped his right hand at it and to his surprise it was a rattlesnake now fleeing back into the brush just outside their campsite. In a drowsy state of mind, half from being awoken from sleep, the other from the poison just injected in his veins, the man stumbled to his wife’s tent and told her what had happened. She grabbed her cell phone and called an ambulance and the man was taken care of. If only the man had used a tint, he could have avoided all confrontation with creatures from the wild.

Camping 101: Dual or light-weight camping stove

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Most of the time camping stoves are easy to set-up and it takes up little space as possible. A good camping stove will need to have a steady base-of-support. Try to avoid the ones that wobble on uneven surfaces or when they have a large item on top of them.

Consider getting the most dependable, strong, compact, light, easy-to-use, camping stove that performs well in all the conditions you encounter. Keep in mind if you have to travel outside the United States make sure to look at multi-fuel camping stoves because white gas is hard to find.

If you’re camping with families and groups at a campground where you do not have to move much, try to have the two burner camping stoves, this will help with make meal preparation faster and easier. When hiking or backpacking though you will want to travel with a lighter camping stove.

Camping stoves can weigh less than four ounces, not including the fuel and container. A quality camping stove is designed to fit inside other equipment used for camping. This makes packing and traveling easier and less time consuming. The dual burner and light-weight stoves are split into two types, liquid fuel or canister.
