Tools for a campfire
Thursday, July 30th, 2009I learned at an early age that building a campfire is easy when you have the right tools and know-how. There are a few basic steps that you must do in order to prep the site for the fire. Bring along a small broom and a miniature shovel to clear any leaves, rocks or other debris. Take a sturdy bag, a mesh one works well, for collecting rocks, branches and twigs. Don’t forget a bucket and fire extinguisher, safety first!
There are several different ways to start a fire but we have a bunch of boy scouts in our family and they prefer the old fashioned friction and leaves method. Regardless of how you get a flame going, construct your fire so that it best suites your intention whether it’s cooking, warmth or storytelling there’s a specific way to build it. Consult a scouting book or website for instructions on how to build different types of campfires. Remember to always douse the campfire and scatter the ashes. Never build a fire near a tent and never leave it unattended. Following those rules will give you the best campfire experience possible!
