History Of The Outdoor Backpack… Then and Now
A long, long time ago, it can be said that humans always do outdoor backpack in that as they move settlements to another settlements, they bring all their belongings as well as their whole household with them. It can be said that outdoor backpacking was their lifestyle.
It is also to be noted that the whole settlement is a complete camping equipment as it can be compared to what you do when you engage in this kind of activity but nowadays, it is just for pleasure or perhaps a sporting activity rather than a way of living.
Of course eventually, humans have learned to be civilized in their settlements. Basically, they started to stay in one place for they have learned how to cultivate the land and to harness livestock hence they no longer need to move around for greener pasture.
At times, some of the men still wander far beyond their settlements in search of new food and other things but comes back to their settlements in a forth night or so. If they think that their destination is near, normally they do not need to bring clothing, just their bows and arrows but if they plan to go far beyond, of course they carry things they needed for their journey.
Nowadays, this is all different. Backpacking means many things to a lot of many people but the commonality is that you put things you need in a backpack and travel wherever, whenever, however. To some, it is a way of getting more knowledge. Their freedom from work allows them to travel normally outside of their countries to know different cultures, different societies and experience life that they have never known exist. Some even come to the point of relocating from an original idea of just passing by to a certain place,
Outdoor backpacking, which is included in most hiker’s camping equipment, became a trend to younger generations from first countries like the US or Europe simply because when they are out of job, unemployment benefit benefits them more if they live outside of their country. After six months living off their support, they go back and work again for six months so they are entitled to new support which during the cycle makes them happy living in an exciting countries like Thailand, Vietnam or Cambodia for example.
That is why since early 1990’s the term “backpackers” was coined which is mostly for those foreigners with their backpacks in third world countries enjoying their youthful lives on the beaches, the discos and the food stalls in tourist places like Phuket or Angkor Wat.
Of course if you pack your bags and simply attend a day trip to the beach and camp there overnight, that is also an outdoor backpacking, along with a good camping knife. Perhaps even if you just plan to stay in your backyard for a few days and never come in your house and still have packed your things to a backpack just so you have what you need, that still can be called an oudoor backpack, which you should include in your camping equipment arsenal.
