How To Take Care Of Camping Equipment
There nothing more disappointing than finding out about that large gaping rip in your tent, the blunt hunting knife that can’t cut, or damp mildew filled sleeping bags, when you are miles into the wilderness and depending on your equipment to get you through the trip.
Camping gear must be well taken care of especially since it usually spends most of the year in storage but when it’s needed, it’s expected to work perfectly. Here are a few simple tips to help you maintain some import items of your camping equipment.
Tents:
One of your tents worst enemies is damp caused by rain and dew. Always ensure that you properly air out your tents and allow them to dry completely before packing them away. Tents should never be soaked completely while cleaning nor should they be machine washed, they cleaned by simply using a wet sponge with a mild cleaning solution and lay outside to dry completely before storing. By storing tent poles and pegs in a separate bag, you avoid those causing tiny rips or tears in the fabric. Also inspect your tents after each trip for rips that should be patched up immediately.
Backpacks:
Backpacks should also be cleaned thoroughly after every use and examined for tears or frayed straps. Unlike tents however, most backpacks can be machine washed. Zips have a tendency of breaking or getting caught, so always check the zip before you set off, trimming any threads that may get caught in the track. Also ensure while packing that any sharp objects are wrapped up before placing them in your backpack, so that they do not cut into the fabric.
Knives:
Knives are a camper’s best friend, but a blunt one can be a nightmare. To ensure that your knives remain sharp and ready, always keep the blade of your knife dry. Wipe off any fingerprints before putting it away, and store it in a leather or thick canvas scabbard to protect the blade. You should sharpen the blade at least once a year, or before every camping trip. Some swear by the use a fine coating of gun oil on the blade while storing, that should we wiped clean off before usage.
Sleeping Bags:
Sleeping bags too must be only machine washed as per the label instructions when necessary and perhaps only a couple of times over the life of the bag. Ensure that the bag is fluffed regularly to prevent the insulation clumping together. Dry the bag turning it inside out and allow it to air properly before storage. Not rolling your sleeping bag too tightly, and stuffing the insides with linen when storing for extended periods which will make the bag last longer.
Having spent a good amount of money buying camping; by following these simple suggestions and taking proper care of your camping equipment; will ensure that your equipment lasts for many years and work perfectly when needed, as your survival outdoors may sometimes depend on it.
