What to Include in a First Aid Kit

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Every household should have a standard first aid kits with emergency supplies to take care of minor medical problems.  A first aid kit should include the standard bandages, alcohol wipes, tape, gauze pads, aspirin and acetaminophen, antibiotic cream, tweezers, gloves, ipecac syrup, and cold packs.  In addition to these basic supplies there are a few essentials to any first aid kit that many people don’t think about.

You should also include a card with the poison control number and the emergency number to call if the 911 emergency system is not available.  You should also include a card with family doctor names, any allergies suffered by family members and any essential medication information for family members.  You should have notes in the first aid kit if someone is an insulin dependent diabetic, has a pacemaker, or is a transplant patient.  These are the basics of any house household first aid kit to keep your family safe in an emergency.

Don’t Forget Emergency Food Kits

Friday, June 12th, 2009

In the process of getting together emergency preparedness kits, a lot of people end up forgetting to add food as part of their survival kits.  If you become stranded or end up in a situation where you need to rely on your survival kit, having food and drinking water becomes essential.  This is especially true in any event where help may be a long way off.

An emergency food kit can be bought at most camping suppliers, grocery stores, or even online.  A good kit will be stored inside a sealed waterproof container and contain enough rations for you and your entire family.  Be sure to store your kit in a cool, dry place to ensure it remains in usable condition for when you need it.  Most kits have shelf lives of 10 to 20 years if stored properly.
