Facts about Shake-To-Charge Flashlights

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

A shake-to-charge flashlight can be an invaluable tool in many situations.  Because these flashlights rely on an internal electromagnetic mechanism to provide the charge, no batteries are necessary.  Shaking the flashlight for a few minutes allows an internal capacitor to store enough electricity for extended use.  Although you need to keep shaking the flashlight at regular intervals to provide long-term light, it will not wear out.  Most models provide steady moderately bright light for a short distance.  The frequency of shaking required and the quality and duration or light depends on the quality of flashlight you buy.

Although some marketing claims are overblown, the utility of a flashlight that will never have dead batteries is undeniable.  Keep in mind that it can easily be broken if dropped, but it is relatively waterproof and maintenance free.  Since it works on the principle of electromagnetism and contains a magnet it should not be stored or used around sensitive electronics such as computers.  The more powerful models can also affect the operation of pacemakers.  Shake-to-charge flashlight can be a valuable tool in an emergency situation or for quick repair jobs.  The fact that they require no batteries is not only good for the environment, but means that you will always have a functioning light when you need it.

Fun Flashlight Walk for Kids

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Children have always loved flashlights.  There is something magical about A starry night with nothing but a flashlight to guide the way.  The next time you take the kids camping or go on a nature walk in your local park at dusk grab some flashlights and try this fun game.  Kids and adults alike will have a blast.

Give each participating person his own flashlight. Slowly walk along a trail or campsite.  Have walkers look for cool stuff in nature by shining their flashlight on objects they pass such as rocks, spider webs, tree leaves, etc.  Stay quiet and listen for cool sounds.  Try to identify where the noises are coming from and what is making them.

Once you have walked for awhile stop for a break.  Discuss what you see and how, even at night, the forest is still alive with animals, insects and nature. This game helps children focus on things they may not even notice during daylight.  This teaches children to love the outdoors.  It also helps children to become comfortable with the dark.
