Fun Camping Activities

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Camping is a fun idea that is great for the whole family.  There are lots of different activities you can take advantage of that will bring the campers closer together.  One fun idea is having a camp site scavenger hunt.  You can simply make a list of common plants or other things found in the area you’re camping near and have everyone split up to find the items.  The first person, or team, to find all of the items wins a fun prize, like getting out of dish duty.

Another neat camping activity is playing a round robin story game.  The way this works is that everyone sits around the camp fire.  The first person starts a story with a few sentences but leaves off in the middle of a sentence.  The next person begins where the last person ends and takes the story in their own direction. These stories can be funny or scary – or even a combination of both!  They are a great way to get everyone to talk and laugh together at the campfire.

Flashlight Maintenance Tips

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Here are some tips that are helpful to campers that are bringing a flashlight. One tip would be to put the batteries, if your flashlight is battery operated, in the flashlight upside down for the ride to the campsite. This will ensure you that the batteries won’t run out by the switch accidentally flicking the light on. Another tip is to check the bulb to make sure it shines bright before you leave. You wouldn’t want the bulb to burn out on you during your camping trip. It may be a good idea to bring extra batteries and bulbs just to be on the safe side.

Next, you may want to check to see if the lens is cracked or damaged. If so you would want to fix this before you leave for your trip. Another thing to look for is any type of damage on the flashlight that may cause it to stop working. After you leave for your trip make sure you continue to take care of your flashlight while camping. If the flashlight gets wet make sure you wipe it off that way it does not begin to corrode or rust. Just remember to be safe on your trip and take good care of your flashlight.

Why Use a Composite Bow for the Hunt?

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Many hunters are trying their hands these days at bow hunting as a way of both giving themselves a challenge as well as providing them with a less expensive means of getting out to the hunt. Materials prices for things like ammunition have exploded in recent years, making firearm hunting a less cost effective proposition. Bow hunting these days is mainly done through the use of a composite bow, named so due to its construct from composite materials like plastic, metal, and graphite. These bows are often lightweight and make aiming and releasing an easy task for the average individual, even those new to the hunt.

In addition, many general retailers with sporting goods departments carry bow hunting equipment, even if they are not as big in the area of hunting as other stores. The wide variety of materials available for purchase, and the reasonable prices for many of the starting pieces of equipment, can allow a bow hunter to get out into the wild more easily. Couple this in with a host of available resources, from guidebooks about using your bow more effectively to tips and strategies about how to best aim and fire at your specific target animal, and the use of a bow to hunt seems like a more viable option for the everyday outdoorsman or outdoorswoman.
