When going on a camping trip, a picnic is an American tradition. A simple picnic basket full of lunch to feed either your entire family, or perhaps make for an intimate date. Even the word picnic is embedded in the American psyche, bringing forth images of a sunny day, a grassy hill topped by an oak tree for shade, and a wicker basket topped with a red and white checkered blanket.

Before you go on a picnic though, you must pack it. You’ll need food, beverages, cutlery, and plates or bowls. You might also need camping equipment and gear, especially if you plan to make your outing last more than a few hours.

Next you must have your time and location for your picnic items. Make sure to check the weather forecast in advance so that you can get a nice day. Also be sure to sit down to eat somewhere with equal parts sun and shade. You don’t want things to be too dark or too bright and hot.

Most importantly though, is the food.
