The Lost Vacation: Family Hiking in the Woods

Over the years families have insisted on taking vacations at least once a year; maybe every other year depending on their incomes. These vacations often range from going to the beach, scenic sights or big cities. All of which cost a good sum of money just to have some quality family time.

Other vacationers know ways to save money when going. For instance some get deals on hotels, plane tickets, and so forth. Still it ends up being a large chunk of income every year going into vacationing. Some couples often find themselves asking: Is family time really worth it? When that money could be spent elsewhere, vacation seems hopeless and like a bad idea to families across the world.

An overlooked family event that costs only a minor portion of what big vacations do is family hiking. Instead of an annual budget going to buying resort reservations and tickets; the money can be saved or put to use else where as hiking gear is really only purchased once. A money saving, family oriented vacation that can create memories for years to come. How to get involved with this is quite simple.

First you will need to purchase all of your camping gear. Decide whether or not you want to spend the night in the woods and make it a hiking and camping trip. If so you will definitely need to purchase camping tents and a few flashlights. These will protect you from the elements; wind, snow, rain, and the dark!

Other essential supplies are a good, comfortable pair of hiking shoes. Do not be distracted by brand names or looks as hiking shoes often are not comparable to modern sneakers.  Just buy your pair based upon how they feel and how durable you think they will be. Next is a buck knife and other accessories you will need to carry on you. Having a good quality knife is important for many occasions.

For food make sure you pack light. Trail mixes and energy bars are great along with canned foods for actual sit down meals. Often times it is good to purchase a small backpack that you can carry the essentials in while you move; things such as pots and pans, jerky, lighters or matches, cameras, and so on. These things will all become vital in having a good time as just eating energy bars is not going to set a good vibe and is not very healthy!

The experiences of going into the woods as a family and spending quality time hiking and sleeping in floor tents together is incomparable to any other vacation. There are so many possibilities to enjoy yourselves in the woods whether it be catching small animals or flashlight wars around a campfire. A great tradition to start for a new family, or an even better one for an older family - camping and hiking is a fun event that will be anticipated for years to come!
