The Right Equipment for an Outdoor Adventure

For families everywhere, camping is a time-honored summer activity. Before heading into the great outdoors, however, it is advisable to make a checklist to ensure that you have the best equipment available. In the excitement of the days before the trip, it is all too easy to overlook an important tool, especially for the novice. While some obvious pieces of equipment are more difficult to forget, such as a tent, others are not so obvious. The right equipment to take also varies with the intended destination.

For example, although a tent is a staple of camping, there are different kinds that are suited for different environments. Reading the description on the packaging of the tent before purchasing it can make the decision easier. Some important things to consider are the dryness of the environment (or whether a rain tarp would be in order), the texture of the ground (such as whether it is wooded or a grassy plain), the amount of space available in which to pitch the tent, and the size of the campers themselves.

If the destination you have in mind is a modern campground with electric hookups available, then a recreational vehicle or camper may be in order. Whatever sort of housing best suits the environment, there are many more pieces of equipment to remember. Once the tent, R.V., or camper is set up, there is the matter of bedding to address.

Sleeping bags are the time-tested, preferred method for the tent camper, but an even more affordable method is to simply to make a pallet out of blankets and pillows on the floor of your shelter. Air mattresses are a good alternative to either of these options.

After a restful night under the stars, there is nothing better than a hearty breakfast. In nearly any environment, the camper will have access to a fire. Hot dog and marshmallow spits are readily available at sporting supply stores, as are racks that make it possible to use a pan on the fire.

For the camper seeking a less rustic option, small, portable gas grills may be the perfect addition to your camping repertoire. These grills generally require propane tanks, but miniature versions of the tanks can be purchased for less money. With the matter of food covered, the outdoor adventurer can settle in to relax. In order to make for the best possible trip, there are a number of items to ensure make it into the car before leaving.

Insect repellant for both the body and the area around the campsite is an absolute necessity, as is sunscreen, even if it seems overcast or cool. Small, hand-held fans can ease even the hottest of days, and spray bottles filled with water are a quick and easy way to cool off. If a shower is not within a short distance of the campsite, baby wipes are a great way to freshen up. With these items on hand, any camping trip can become a lifelong memory.
