When did Camping Tents Become Toys for Kids?

Back in the day when I was a kid growing up in the sixties my neighbors who lived down the street had an extremely large green camping tent. They bought this tent for a camping trip that never happened. One night they decided to put up this tent in their back yard and let the neighborhood kids have a sleepover. Was this the beginning of a new trend?

All the kids on the block were a buzz with excitement about this sleepover. My friends and I couldn’t wait for the night to begin. We spent the whole afternoon getting our gear ready. Our dad’s flashlights were an important accessory for this event since we had big plans for walking around outside in the dark.

When night time finally came we all walked together to my neighbors’ house. They had made all kinds of treats ready for us to eat while inside the tent. They had popcorn balls, chips, cookies and colas. This sleepover was going to be great. We all ran from the house to the back yard and piled into an enormous green tent.

Everything was going great. We were having popcorn fights and checking out our flashlights while the night sky grew darker and darker. This was going to be a night to remember. Then suddenly we heard a strange noise from out side. The sides of the tent started rumbling and scary faces appeared in the tent windows.

We all started to cry and run from the tent. “We want to go home,” we all yelled while running into our neighbor’s house. It turned out the neighborhood teenagers also had plans for this campout. They came running around from the back of the tent wearing mask and laughing at us. Yes, this would be a night to remember. The night the teenagers won and took over our great sleepover.
